On Dogma
The other day I taught a small-group lesson to a few of my college students. One (very talented) student brought in a bounce of a song he’d produced and mixed for a friend of his.
It’s really quite good- great performances, compelling songwriting, a quirky sparse arrangement that leaves a lot of room for serious width in the stereo field. It’s music I’d legitimately want to listen to.
The Importance of the Rough Mix
I want to speak to the importance (really, the necessity…) of producers + artists spending time on a really, really good rough mix. Not just 10 or 15 minutes at the end of the session, but a dedicated, specific effort in shaping the sound of the production and communicating the artistic vision.
Understanding Time Constants in FabFilter Pro-L 2
FabFilter’s Pro-L 2 is one of the most popular limiters in use today, and for good reason. It sounds great, it’s simpler and faster to use than some other limiters, and it has a wide range of advanced features if you want to get tweaky.
That said, certain aspects of it are widely misunderstood, and not clearly explained. This leads to results that often sound smaller, squishier, less dynamic, and less alive than they could be.
Your Results Will Be the Inverse of Your Listening System
It holds true for all aspects of recorded sound: Frequency spectrum, transient content, dynamic range, stereo imaging, reverb levels, and so on down the list.
Session Delivery Guidelines
A quick note here, on how to best deliver your work, so I can do my thing most effectively. Also, when in doubt, please email with any questions. Always easier to talk these things through ahead of time.
Cranesong HEDD Quantum
Picked up a new HEDD Quantum for the studio. I wasn’t initially sure about hopping on a months-long wait list for a converter, but I gotta say: it is beyond my expectations.
Frawley "Someone You Loved" Cover
Mixed this new one for Frawley. Quick acoustic cover, but she sounds absolutely amazing.
Check it out, and give a listen. Out now on Island Records.
